Traditional Elders Convened in Mogadishu

Mogadisho:(A.M.Network) The Constituent Assembly conference was convened in Mogadishu today, bringingtogether 135 traditional elders to decide the selection of the assembly that will adopt a constitution and a new parliament.

The well-attendedceremonial day featured the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker ofthe Parliament, who received the traditional elders with enthusiasms andpraised their leadership. The conference signifies the commitment of the signatoriesof the Roadmap, especially in the agreement to end the transitional period intime.

“We welcome our national elders; welcome toMogadishu” said President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who expressed “confidence in theelders” and stated that they will lead the nation to a national unity. ThePresident expressed his appreciation to the donors that supported Somaliathroughout the transitional periods.

“The Somali people are expecting a lot fromthe elders today” said the Speaker of the Parliament, Sharif Hassan, who urgedthe elders “to agree on all common national interests.”

The governmentexplained its achievements over the last several months and ensured that itwill finalize the activities of the Roadmap within the remaining months. ThePrime Minister, Abdiwali Mohamed Ali, stressed the improvements made so far inthe security area that enabled the government to host a major conference ofthis scale.

The civil societygroups were also present in the conference, and stated their commitments tosupport the traditional elders who embody not only the interests of civilsociety groups, but also the larger society as well.

The governmentconsiders this conference a great milestone, converging key traditional eldersand completing the draft constitution, which brings the outstanding benchmarksin the Roadmap to few activities before August 20, 2012.

The Minister ofConstitution, Mr. Abdirahman Hosh Jibril, expelled the misinformation thatcertain groups were making on the draft constitution. “The draft constitutioncomplies with our faith” said Mr. Jibril who encouraged the public to supportthe traditional elders to deliver their mandate.
